Painting is like most art, an exercise in problem solving.

Painting is often about resolving questions.

The initial stages of all prints generally involve a fair amount of drawing and sketching in various media. These sketches are done as problem solving exercises. They attempt to answer all sorts of questions relating to whether a print will be successful - they are a kind of "if I do it this way, will it capture that certain something I see there?" exercise. The question is usually not so general but instead will ask: "if I use these colours?", or "If I arrange the image like this?" for example. This is why a whole series of these sketches tends to proceed the serious business of pinning down exactly where and how the lino will be cut.
