Cutting lino blocks for block prints

The first lino blocks for a new collection
Block relief platesPicture: left - an almost complete block; middle - a part cut block; right - a block prepared for cutting.

These three blocks of lino represent the beginnings of three different prints. You can clearly see which surfaces have been cut away, so will not print and which surfaces remain so will print. The blocks are reversed and will be the other way around when printed.

"Block Print": The term block print simply means a print produced using a block of material. The material can be wood, lino, plastic or anything in a block. The surface of the block is modified by making indentations or cutting and gouging, with tools (Such as Woodcut tools). Block prints can also be referred to as 'Relief prints' because cutting away the surface of the block creates a relief effect - clearly visible in the image above.
