Ideas for an original print are sketched out. These sketches can be numorous and different sizes, from tiny thumbnails to larger drawings. They can also be in any media, such as pencil, watercolour or inks for example. The key thing the printmaker is doing in step 1, is deciding on the design of the image – generally referred to as 'composition'. In their mind also, they will be thinking about the number of plates they will cut and how many colours they will use.
